Lily: She is Jonas's 7 year old sister. She likes to talk a lot and is very smart for her age, but she isn't very mature.
Jonas's Mom: Works at the Department of Justice and takes her job very seriously. She gives Jonas advice to help him while growing up.
Jonas's Dad: A nurturer who is very loving and cares for the new children. Has a great relationship with his family. He also releases the new children who are undeveloped.

Fiona: One of Jonas's friends, she works in the house of the old. Jonas's first stirrings involved her.
The Giver: Knows every single memory and event that has happened before. Gives Jonas all his memories.
Summary: In chapters 1-10 of The Giver you are introduced to many of the characters, like Jonas. He is an eleven year old boy that is very smart and caring for others. At the beginning of the story Jonas is feeling anxious and somewhat frightened at what job he will be assigned at the upcoming ceremony of twelve. That is when all the children who are turning twelve will get their jobs. Jonas doesn’t know what job he will receive and is anxious for it. Meanwhile at home Jonas’s dad (who is a nurturer) brings home a small child named Gabriel, and the family cares for him during the night. Jonas also has his first stirrings and has to take medication for it. A short while later the ceremony of twelve arrived. Jonas waited calmly for his job to be announced, but when it was his turn he was skipped. After everyone else’s job had been announced they called Jonas up to the stage. They announced that Jonas would now have the most important job in the community, Receiver of Memory.
Themes: The themes of The Giver include love, trust, and maturity.
Why I think the book should be banned: I think this book should be banned because on page 35 chapter 5 Jonas has his first stirrings about his friend Fionna. I think this is to sexual to be read in certain classes.
The reason the book was banned: The Giver was banned for many reasons that include suicide, euthanasia, violence, being sexually explicit, and many more. Many middle and high schools across the country have banned or challenged this book for these reasons.
Literary Devices used in this story: Symbol - The sled represents the journey that Jonas goes on throughout the story. page 82
Foreshadowing - I could tell something was going to happen when Jonas began seeing the apple, peoples faces and Fiona's hair change. page 90 Simile - Jonas's hands were like cold, wet, fur. page 81
My opinion about the book: I think that this book should not be taught in school because it sends a bad message to the reader. It includes to much talk about suicide, violence, and sexual themes. Middle school kids shouldn't learn about some of these things until highschool.
